Keatyn Chronicles

 5 of 5 stars false
Gossip girl meets Hollywood in this new series by That Boy author, Jillian Dodd.
Keatyn has everything she ever dreamed of. Her life is following the script she wrote for the perfect high school experience. She’s popular, goes to the best parties, dates the hottest guy, and sits at the most coveted lunch table.
She’s just not sure she wants it anymore.
Because really, things aren’t all that perfect.
Her best friend is threatening to tell everyone her perfect relationship is a scam.
Her perfect boyfriend gets drunk at every party they go to.
It’s exhausting always trying to look and act perfect.
And deep down, she isn’t sure if she has any true friends.
To add to the drama, her movie star mom’s long-time fan has turned stalker.
An older man is flirting with her and telling her they should make a movie together.
And she’s crushing on an adorable surfer. Dating a guy like him would mean committing social suicide.
So she writes a new script. One where all the pieces of her life will come together in perfect harmony.
But little does she know, there’s someone who will do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen.

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****
Keatyn has the perfect life on paper, the perfect boyfriend, good friends and popular. In reality her boyfriend always gets drunk, her friends may only like her because Keatyns mom is a superstar and popularity is not all it's cracked up to be. I loved this book, it was funny without trying to be with lots of drama without being to serious. I really enjoyed how Jillian merged the script that Keatyn wrote for her life with the book. The characters ranged from lovable and caring to bitchy and selfish. I started reading this book; before I knew it I was caught up in the story and cared about the characters. There was so much going on in this book, but it wasn't to busy and was really easy to follow. I am a bit burned out on love triangles, but this one was done is such a way that I didn't feel like it was a repeat of other ones I had seen. While I normally loathe cliffhangers I already have the next book so it did not bug me.  I think anybody over the age of sixteen is going to love this book.

 5 of 5 stars false
I've always written scripts for my perfect life.
But no way could I have ever scripted this.
My life is so far from perfect, it’s not even funny.
All because of a stalker.
I’m at a boarding school where I have to lie about who I am.
I can’t see my family.
I’m tutoring a Hottie God that tortures me with his smile.
The most popular girl already hates me.
But there’s this boy.
This hot, sweet, sexy boy.
So I’m going to stop trying to script my life and just live it.
Because who knows how long I have left.

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****
Kiss Me is the second book in the Keatyn chronicles and starts right where Stalk Me left off, Keatyn is away at a boarding school. She can't talk to any of her friends; she is in a new place and has all new problems. The queen bee of the school hates her, the hottest guy likes her and she still has to worry about the stalker. I was once again sucked into the story that is Keatyns life, but I missed all the characters from the first book. It was nice to get new characters; it just took me a little while to start liking these new characters. The new boy problems were the same as the old ones;  but the new boys were just different enough from the old ones that it was fresh instead of a repeat. I still really liked the book; it was full of humor and showed how Keatyn has grown up a little bit. Jillian wrote another great story with wonderful characters. I want to say more about this book but I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say that this was a wonderful book and I can't wait to read the next one.

****I was given a copy of this book for my honest review****
The first two thirds of this book was a little hard to get into. I can't quite put my finger on why, the story circled around everything love. It was a unique paranormal story with Vampires, Shifters, Valkyries, Immortals and others. This topped off with lots of steam and interesting characters should have made it perfect.
What I think went wrong for me was that a lot was being said, but not all that was said was important. Page long dialogue's between Infinity , our leading lady, and her friends and mum, seemed to go on forever and I couldn't see why these were necessary. These conversations I felt, could have been minimized and the sections with the world building enlarged.
I wanted more of this wonderfully unique fantasy world, with it's supernatural creatures. There were politics going on that I still hadn't gotten a handle on by the end of the book and I think more explanation would have helped.
In the last third of the book things started to come together and we start to understand things about our leading lady Infinity and I started to feel a little sorry for her. Liars are everywhere around her and she has been purposefully kept in the dark, this leads to silly mistakes on this characters part, but she doesn't know any better. She could easily be and unlikeable character, seen as spoilt and uncaring, if not for this last part of the book. Even then I wanted to slap her for certain decisions made.... but I will not go into it, don't want to spoil it for you :)
I loved the introduction of Boulder and Torch, these characters certainly made things interesting in this story. They were solid right from there very first scenes and I instantly liked both of them. Also because of them, we find out a lot more back story. They also cranked up the steamy relationship factor in the book.
With all this talk of Three and one and one and one in all the cryptic old lady dreams, dare I hope we have a beautiful, shifter triad on the cards for the next book??
Although I loved the idea of this book, I felt I was a little let down by the unexplained and lack of info. This may all be rectified in the following book....but.. and this is a big but for me,
all these books nowadays that are being broken up into chapter books, or sections and being made into a series need to have it all out there in the first book, to really reel you in. It can't just be left to the cliffhanger ending to keep your interest and hope that you want enough to find out what happens to get the next book.
In saying that, I believe I have been reeled in enough, but just enough, to be keen to get my hands on the next one. The ending is killing me, talk about mega cliffhanger.
What really one this book for me truly, was the different twist on a paranormal book. It is really worth seeing how it will turn out , it definitely has lots of promise.

A Real Man 18+

The following review is for 18+ readers.

3 of 5 stars false
FIVE WOMEN. ONE NIGHT. ONE YEAR TO GET IT RIGHT.
Stifled by her previous marriage, widowed Melissa swears to find herself a real man—but Matt finds her instead, rescuing her from a car wreck and proving that the years since high school have only made him more desirable.
A crash resounded; Melissa's chest hit the steering wheel, the air bag deployed with a bang then black silence.
A moment later, or so it seemed, a siren howled in the night. She opened her eyes and lifted her head.
"Ow-ow-ow."
Her neck ached, her head pounded, slivers of steel pierced her eyes. A rap on her window. A man in uniform crouched beside her window for an instant then opened the door.
"Can you hear me?" a deep voice asked. A voice that twanged a chord inside her despite her various aches and pains.
"Yes."
"Good."
Good. She pleased the sensuous voice. Good.
"I'm going to touch you."
Yes. Please.
Warm fingers smoothed over her forehead, down her cheeks, behind the base of her skull.
"Does any of this hurt?"
His touch? No! Oh, he meant her head.
"My head. My neck. My eyes. All of them."
"Anywhere else?" His long fingers moved over her shoulders, along her arms, around her hips and down her legs.
"Feels good." Damn. She'd said that out loud.
"I'd better check your head again."
He pulled off her ski hat and gasped. "Melissa Martin?"
The question in his suddenly familiar voice blasted her eyelids up. In the dim light she saw a man with a dark beard around a sensual mouth. Her gaze moved up past a scar on his cheek to dark, concerned eyes then back to the scar she'd kissed a hundred times a lifetime ago. "Matt Conroy?"

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****

This book starts out with a recap of the New Years Eve party in the first book, but it's from Melissa’s point of view. We find out that Melissa was in a marriage with an indifferent and controlling husband who died. Three months after the party Melissa has started school again and on her way to a study date she gets in a car accident and her ex-boyfriend from high school is on of the EMTs who pulls her out of the car. Matt and Melissa reconnect, but Melissa wants a real man and she doesn't know if Matt is it. Matt knows he used to be a jerk, he wants Melissa again and he has to find a way to prove to her that he is nothing like the boy he used to be. Melissa wasn't an ordinary woman trying to take her life back after living in a blah marriage. Matt was a nice man willing to prove himself as a good guy, he has a good job and really cares about the people he helps. A Real Man was a quick read; at 131 pages it only took me less than an hour to read the thing. It was a nice quick love story, nothing about it really stood out to me, but there was nothing bad about it either. Since the book was so short things happened quickly, it was a light airy read. If you are looking for a quick, cute love story without a lot of drama you should read this book.

Ten Tiny Breaths 18+

The following review is for 18+ reader
 5 of 5 stars false

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.
Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.
But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

Review

Just breathe. Ten tiny breaths … Seize them. Feel them. Love them.”
This is one of those times that I will try and write a blooming great review for a book and will just come out lacking. I honestly don't think I can do this book justice.
Ten Tiny Breaths amazed me. I was left a bubbling mess, rethinking all the pain and anguish these characters had gone through to finally reach a happily ever after.
This love story was a good one and although I saw where it was going before I got there I don't think it did anything to put me off. In fact because I was pretty sure where it was going it made everything that happened, everything that was said that more full on.
Trent and Kacey have haunted paths, tragedy haunts both of them. One is full of anger, the other seeking forgiveness.
They come together and for once Kacey can't seem to push someone away.
Trent has a determination about him to make things right for Kacey and it is a lovely thing.
"I want to make you smile. For real. Always. We're going to go for dinners, and see movies, and walk on the beach. We'll go hang gliding, or bungee jumping, or whatever you want to do. Whatever makes you smile and laugh more. Let me make you smile."
I felt such anguish for Trent in this book, to work so hard, god!!! You will understand when you read it. What a wonderful man with such good intentions, I could not flaw him for them.
"I'll make you whole again, Kacey. I promise you, I will.”
There is an array of beautiful secondary characters that really make this book, they give it an extra sparkle. Storm and Mia are a pair I am glad were put in as they broke up the seriousness and helped bring out the hope. Not just for characters but for me as well.
Ten Tiny Breaths is a tale of tragedy, trauma but also hope and forgiveness.
It has been written extremely well, with the flash backs, each time you feel the horror of Kacey and you understand her pain.
I feel very lucky to have read this book, it is definitely one that will stay with me.
I love, love, loved it and I would recommend it to all as it is a very worthwhile read.

The Tease

 2 of 5 stars false
Anna Zendel is your average 32-year-old therapist, stressing about clinical exams and struggling to recover from an abusive relationship. But at night she transforms herself into the saucy burlesque dancer Velvet Crush, enchanting Chicago audiences with the art of the tease.
As Anna struggles to keep the therapy and burlesque worlds separate and get over her crush on the troupe's emcee, a new danger threatens women across the city. The papers have dubbed him the Darling Killer, because after strangling his victims, he scrawls the word "darling" on their skin.
When one of Anna's fellow dancers is murdered in the dressing room, she realizes that Darling Killer could be closer than she thought. Could Max, Anna's new therapy client who confessed to fantasizing about dead girls and obsessing over the Darling Killer, have anything to do with the murders?
As more women are murdered, and Anna begins receiving mysterious gifts, this burlesque dancer pits feathers and sequins against foul play in the deadliest dance of all.

Review

****NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book for my honest review****
Anna is a therapist who moonlights as a burlesque dancer; she is still recovering from an abusive relationship and working to get over her crush on a fellow worker at the club. After one of the dancers is murdered at the club Anna works at, other women around her start dying. Anna is trying to stay safe and find the killer, at the same time she starts a new relationship. This book started out so good I liked Anna in the beginning, she was strong and in control of her sexuality. All the sudden she became a weak and neurotic, it just went down from there. Her obsessive inner monologue and second guessing every single person in her life became repetitive and annoying. After obsessing over every little thing and making bad decisions she finally makes a good one. She makes a few right choices and warns her friends to be careful, and then she isn't careful herself. Ugh this book was so infuriating and to top it all off we are left with a cliffhanger. I won't be reading the next book in this series.

Review

*** Edelweiss gave me this arc in exchange of an honest review***

The blurb of this book did not do it justice. Highlander Most Wanted was a totally absorbing read. I finished it one sitting, I just did not want to put it down.
We start this book sort of in the middle. Genevieve, our heroine, has already endured the most horrid of torments. Her captor is dead, but she is not yet free, trapped by her "fallen" reputation, although not of her own making, she is shamed, she hates what she has become and all that she has had to endure to survive. She has literally been stripped of all dignity and to top it all off she is hated by the clan who kept her captive. This part I found incredibly hard to take, I was angry for her. I was honestly emotionally shredded by her circumstances.
If anyone is in need of a knight in shining armour, it is Genevieve. Enter Bowen Montgomery a man set on revenge for a wrong done to his sister in law. He is honour, dignity and goodness incarnate. He quickly sees to the truth of things and sets about righting the incredible wrongs done to Genevieve.
This was my favourite sort of romance. It wasn't fast and rushed, there were many trials and tribulations that they had to go through before they could even get to the bottom of their feelings for each other. So much suffering as well takes it's toll, so learning to trust, regaining hope, learning to live again all took a front seat to passion between these two.
I loved all things about this book. Everything was so well done, the back story horrifying, but not over the top. These things were also not gone into in detail but they were described in a way that left no doubt to the very real chilling situation our heroine found herself in. The characters form the villain , hero, heroine and all the secondary characters were all interesting and very well fleshed out. Nobody felt hollow. The pacing was perfect, I was riveted the whole way through and as I said before I never put the book down. The passion and love I felt between the couple felt real and I will admit to shedding a tear or two towards the end.
This is a very high quality romance book, by a very high quality author. I have read other books of Maya Banks in her Mcabe Trilogy and these are of the same quality. Just simply how romance books should be. I will definitely be reading more books in this series.
Thank you Edelweiss for giving me the privilege to read this arc copy of Highlander Most Wanted. It was a pleasure.

Fallen Ruler

Excerpt
The older, gray-skinned being Lya had seen in her dream now helped her off the soft bed. She was still disoriented. Her head felt detached from her body, like she had been on a rollercoaster for hours. She stared open-mouthed at the weird looking bald being, while she allowed herself to be led. Lya had a vague memory of being lifted from the green gel by him and the younger being. The younger one wasn’t around now. Lya’s feet touched the ground. She wasn’t dreaming. Oh, this was bad.
Her pain had subsided somewhat. Lya looked around the room. It reminded her of those sci-fi movies: clean and modern, with lots of glass. Aside from the narrow, high bed, the only other item in the room was a ten-inch panel, with rows of light running the length of the far wall.
She turned back to study the gray being’s face. He was ugly. He had no hair. The thick membrane around his eyes looked like fake eyelashes. Odd, pulsating veins covered his body.
“Who are you?” Lya’s voice sounded like a rasp. With every word she spoke her head throbbed. “Where am I?”
“In Ray.”
Lya frowned. “Is it near Delhi?”
“A few light years away. It’s a planet, in a parallel universe.”
His words acted like an electrical discharge, jolting Lya awake. She was hallucinating. She knew she was. There was no other explanation. She reached out and touched the gray being. She felt him. Okay, hallucination was real. Her mind was distorting her vision. That sounded plausible. Don’t freak out. Lya smiled. “Is it close to those Streams?”
“It’s beyond that.”
The smile faded from Lya’s lips. “You’re screwing with me, right?”
“Don’t you worry, everything will be fine.”
Lya continued to stare at the gray… man—she guessed he was a man—as his words echoed in her brain. They triggered an image. She saw this same being placing her into that green tank, saying those very same words. Or not her... Lya. Although it felt like her, and somehow she knew it was her, but it was really the albino. The albino didn’t want to leave. She hesitated, grabbing onto the tank’s edges, and asked what it would be like? Would she ever come back? She turned to the older gray being and said, “Natuc, will you bring me back?”
“Natuc?” Lya whispered.
The gray being smiled. “You remembered. Good. Keep alert for those sudden burst of images, that’s how you will get your memory back.”
“My memory?” Lya searched Natuc’s face. “Please tell me this is all a mistake. A punishment for…” Lya couldn’t think of something she should be punished for, she hadn’t done anything all that bad to deserve being locked up in… what was this place?
“Calm down. You’re not hallucinating, Tsaen.”
“Who?”
“Tsaen.”
“Tsaen? The albino, Tsaen? I’m not Tsaen.” Lya bit down on her lower lip. “I’m not Tsaen….”

There her reality is shattered, when she learns the true identity of her rescuers and, even more surprisingly, herself. Lya is now faced with the toughest decision of her life. Can she live up to her ethereal destiny and save her people and her family?

 Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I was provided with a copy for my honest review****

Lya has always thought she was a normal girl, when her dad makes some bad decisions and she ends up in India being rescued by Monks her life changes forever. This book was a pleasant surprise, I don't really read alien books because I have not enjoyed the majority of them, but this book has changed my mind. The main character Lya came off as easy to relate to with a quiet inner strength. The plot line was unique and well thought out. I have to praise Eleanor for the writing, there were so many different aspects to this story, yet it wasn't disjointed. The story flowed together effortlessly; there was lightness and humor in certain spots that balanced out the dark seriousness. I really enjoyed Fallen Ruler and I would recommend it to people who enjoy young adult fantasy books.

Interview with Tina
1. We have seen so many YA writers recently cross over into writing adult fiction. Do you feel the pull to switch over into writing adult stories?
I write what I want to read, at the moment that’s Young Adult. I know Shades of Grey is all the rage and I have thought about writing Adult fiction. The one problem with writing Y/A is that to fit in you have to keep it a little chaste and I guess Adult fiction is where the money is. But at this point I want to finish my series and write another Y/A that isn’t Paranormal and then maybe some adult Paranormal.
2. Why write a paranormal book?
It’s for me just a heightened stylised version of life, a way to explore emotions and experiences we all encounter, but in a far more exciting way. I love the realistic edge that Paranormal gives to fantasy. As a writer and reader I examine my life through make-believe and characters that touch my heart. Paranormal is more raw when compared to fantasy and that appeals to me.
3. What is an iridologist?
Iridology was founded in Germany, like Naturopathy, and is the diagnosis of conditions and disease states of the body indicated by looking at the iris. I am qualified, as most naturopath students are, but I am not currently practising. We use it to confirm diagnosis mostly as well as to indicate the state of health of the patient. It’s very detailed, interesting and telling and I do use the knowledge I have gained when describing the eyes of my characters – the windows to the soul. They are the windows to the health of your body.
4. Do you have any ideas for the next book you will be writing?
Lots – it’s a shame time isn’t infinite and that the human body requires time to recharge. I plan to write more books in the Wolf Sirens Series. Lila and Sky have some hot scenes. Cres has a mega big surprise and Tisane drops a bombshell in book 3, which I am writing right now. We lose some beloved characters and gain a couple more, in the end things come full circle and the curse is broken. Lookout for WS3 in July which is titles Night Fall.
5. What is your favourite character trait of Lila’s?
Her ballsy attitude. The way she is torn between love and desire and her duty. Lila is a strong protagonist, with a chip on her shoulder but she is realistic and unfortunately in love with the wrong guy. She isn’t spiteful and ultimately she cares, she doesn’t rely on anyone. She is the most like me of all my characters. But Cres is my fav.
6. What is it about shifters that intrigued you enough to write a story about them?
I would like to be a wolf, wouldn’t you? I read White Fang and Call of the Wild in primary school twice and watched the movie versions, so I guess it started there. I feel like the issues my “cursed shifters” deal with, are both moving and relatable. I also think we, as humans, have a lot in common with the canine species. The pack dynamic versus the gang dynamic interests me. I like to explore the nitty gritty of emotions and to understand motivation and social dynamics. When you care about the characters because they seem real it drags you in and shows that even though there is violence that it has consequences. Emotions are something worth exploring. I wanted to take PNR to a another deeper level, that’s a big part of why I write.  So come and share in my world! Please Like me on facebook on my authors page. ****NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book for my honest review****
Ellen is a single mother; she works hard and doesn't need a man in her life. Her brother is a celebrity and when the paparazzi start showing up on her property to get a glimpse at her neighbor, who was in a relationship with her brother, he hires a security. Caleb is Ellen’s bodyguard and while he is attracted to her, he is determined to ignore it. Ellen really bugged me in this book; she is so determined to prove she can do things on her own, she cuts off her nose to spite her face. Caleb was a good guy, he is patient and understanding, he gives Ellen the room to work things out in her own head. My only problem with him is that he seemed a little to perfect, at one point it was like oh come on no one is that understanding. I liked Carly and her grandmother they were hilarious. Ellen’s ex-husband was a complete waste of space; I hated him and was really hoping he would fall into a ditch somewhere. I loved that the couple did not have an instant love connection; they lusted after each other a lot.  They had fights and had to learn how to be together, they had a real relationship. This book was a good quick read; I liked the writing and would have rated it higher if I hadn't had problems with the two main characters.

Review

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. ****

Sometimes I really need a good magic book. Something that makes you suspend all logical and realistic thoughts and just read and enjoy with a childlike fascination.
Magic, witches and wizards, oh my!!
"He shot into the air on wings of magic"
Seriously, I had a little jolt of pleasure that ran through my system when I read that line. It was the first magic I had seen in the book and I thought to myself, this is going to be good.
This is going to be something different.
And it was.
Layla, our heroine, has had a difficult time, her mother and only family passes away, leaving her alone.
Through a letter her mother wrote,Layla gets told a crazy story of love, desperation and protection. She finds out that she is not alone and goes searching for the family that gave her up.
All is not as she thought.
What she finds is herself, as in her real self, a handsome protector, an evil enemy after her power and the beautiful and tragic love story of her parents.
The magic in this book was my favorite, the witches and wizards, good and bad, their coven lifestyles, their powers and general day to day existence, I could have had a book about that and been happy.  The bonding and family structures were fascinating and I hope to read more of them in the next book.
The blossoming relationship between Quinlan and Layla, him teaching her about her life, how gentle and sweet he was with her was really lovely . Although it sort of was overshadowed in the end by the tragic but beautiful relationship of her parents, this part of the book was heart wrenching, I definitely shed a tear or two.
Do I sense that history may be about to repeat itself?
My only complaint would be that we got all this information and everything seemed to be at a peak, with the bad guys on the hunt again.... and then it was over and we were left with a cliff hanger ending.
Besides that, Descension was well written, I wasn't bogged down with too much information and it has laid an excellent foundation for what is sure to be a great follow up book/books. I am intrigued and definitely want to know what happens next. I have my own theories, but I guess I will just have to wait and see.... :)

Excerpt
“You are a vampire.”
“A what?” I shrieked.
“You are a vampire, Alyssa,” he said slowly. “An immortal.”
“No! That’s not possible.” I shook my head in disbelief. “Vampires aren’t real. They’re fiction; nothing but stories and myths.”
One of his dark eyebrows rose slightly. He cocked his head to the side. He smirked as his eyes trailed down from my face. “Did you not notice the mark on your neck? Do you not remember drinking my blood?” His fangs showed as he spoke: pure white, sharp little daggers, just a slight bit longer than the rest of his teeth. His voice carried that same arrogance I remembered from when he talked with my attackers.
My mouth hung open. No, this isn’t possible.
Things were still fuzzy in my head, but I did remember the blood, the liquid fire, I had been forced to drink. I’d hoped it had just been some drug-induced dream.
Oh, my God, it was true. I drank his blood. “I’m…a … vampire?”
“Yes.” He smiled. “Our kind are very real. And now, Alyssa, you are one of us.”
I slumped backwards into the cushions of the couch. His words hit me like a punch to the gut. I stared wide-eyed at the distant wall. This was like some terrible nightmare. I didn’t want to believe what he was telling me, but I knew he was right. There was no other way to explain what had happened to me. No amount of hallucinogenic drugs could have explained how I had survived the attack, why I had these markings, or the sharpness of my own new set of fangs.
“Does that mean I’m… undead?”
“You are immortal,” Lysander said with a casual wave of his hand. “Undead is a silly term mortals use to explain the supernatural things they cannot possibly understand. You are no more dead than you were when you woke up this morning. You are just, for lack of a better word, changed.”
Lysander gave me another toothy grin. His fangs were frightening to look at. The memory of him biting me played over and over in my mind like a video stuck on repeat.
“But you drank my blood.” My hand shot back up to cover the wound on my neck.
“Only enough to allow the transformation.”
He reached out, grabbed my hand, and pulled it from my neck.
“Don’t touch me.” I flinched, annoyed and afraid at his sudden gesture. I tried to pull my hand out of his grip, but he was so much stronger than I was. He pushed my hand to my chest, forcing me to feel the erratic thumping of my heart.
“You see,” he said calmly. “Your heart still beats.”
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. “But…how?” I relaxed my hand relaxed under his grip.
“Unlike some of your other organs, your heart is still necessary to keep blood flowing through your body.” Lysander let go of me. “For now, while your body is in transition, it will beat in an accelerated rhythm, but it will eventually slow itself to a more normal pace.”
I was speechless. My mind raced, recalling books and movies, everything I knew about vampire mythology. Bats, stakes, and garlic immediately popped into my mind.
“I must mention that your generation’s ideas of vampires are a bit off.” Lysander spoke with a hint of amusement in his voice. “Many of the popular books and movies about our kind are no more real than children’s fairytales.”
Is he reading my mind? I wondered how he seemed to say just the right thing as I was thinking it. “So, none of the stories are true?”
“Most of the new stories you are probably familiar with are filled with complete nonsense.”
“What about the old ones, like Dracula?”
Lysander sighed. His shoulders slumped. “Dracula is not what I would consider an old story, but yes, a few are based on some truth, however little it may be. There is much that is added to make us seem easier to deal with.” His lip curled into a crooked grin. “Mortals like to think they can hurt us. It helps them sleep at night.”
“So, you’re not afraid of crosses, then?”
Lysander shook his head. “Crosses and other holy relics are nothing more than symbols and decorations. I hardly see why an ornamental cross would stop me from doing anything. Furthermore, I think it’s time for the Christians to come up with a better symbol. One that is a little less… gloomy.”
I chuckled. “Okay, what about garlic?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “What about it?”
“Isn’t garlic bad for vampires?”
“No.” He shook his head. “Why would it be? We don’t eat, so how would it harm us?”
I nodded. “Okay… umm… stakes?”
His head tilted to the side as the corner of his lip rose up into a teasing grin. “You can try to stab me with a piece of wood, but I doubt it will do much more than aggravate me. We heal quite fast. Perhaps a blade would work better.”
I shuddered, seeing his teeth again as he spoke. Is that how I look now?
“So, knives and swords are bad?”
“Yes. It is much harder to regenerate a severed limb. And if we are separated from our heads, it would be safe to say we would cease to exist.”
I smiled, noting the sarcasm in Lysander’s voice. I could tell he’d had this conversation before. He seemed to be enjoying my round of silly questions.
“Holy water?” I blurted out.
Lysander let out a hearty laugh. “No, you won’t melt into a pile of goo. You can throw most of that nonsense out of the window, Alyssa.”
I giggled, realizing how silly it sounded: melting into a pile of goo after being splashed with water. Maybe this won’t be so bad.
“You see, we immortals are not as ridiculous as Hollywood likes to portray us. Though one thing is true... we do survive off the blood of the living.”

Review

****NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book for my honest review****
Hunter enters a motorcycle scavenger hunt to win some money after his life savings is wiped out from a motorcycle accident. One of Fortunes runaway kids also entered her in this contest, when Hunter is chosen and his partner isn't there he has Fortune become his partner. The two of them start out on a scavenger hunt to win the money and end up getting close, they both have to get over their pasts to see if they have a future together. I don't even know where to start, so I am going to dive right in, Hunter was a supposed to be a broken bad boy, but he just came across as an uncaring asshole. Fortune, her name alone was an exaggerated cliche, the little limericks she came up with were supposed to be cute and quirky, they were just annoying and unnecessary. The sex scenes were uncomfortable to read because of the awkwardness. The flow of the book was stilted in some places and then rushed in others. The end of the book had me rereading it because I thought I had read it wrong or misunderstood what happened., but nope that's really how it ended. This book was not a good one for me.
